Jara is a Dutch designer and print enthusiast, currently in her 3rd year at ArtEZ University of the Arts obtaining her bachelor’s in graphic design. 

Her passion for book design, printing, and materials drives her to seek specific design solutions for each project, emphasizing the careful selection of techniques and materials to bring out the project's unique character and visual impact.

Jara has experience in the technical design field after doing prepress internships for one year at robstolk® amsterdam. Under the guidance of Remko Schouten, Alex Feenstra and Freek Kuin, among others she learned the ins and outs of the Graphic Design art industry.

The strength within The hidden chapter in the story of bullying
The Strength Within" (2024) brings a positively focused awareness to the consequences and growth stemming from bullying. While stories of bullying are widely known, this book examines how it actually affects individuals and questions whether the impact is always negative. 

This book shares the experiences of nine people, exploring how they have changed as individuals after experiencing bullying.





Abbie / Abby / Abbey / Abbi Poems

Abby/Abbie/Abbey/Abbi’s poems, a dataset of poems written by children from schoolyears 1-11.

The entire dataset consists of 61.000 poems, the dataset was narrowed down by only using poems written by an Abbie/Abby/Abbey/Abbi, narrowing it down to 170 poems. Each school year has their own-coloured paper, reminding us of our crafts from middle school.


Riso prints

During my studies at ArtEZ I have produced multiple pulications using the riso printer at the academy. Whether it was a workshop, publications for group exhibitions or posters as a call for action for a book.

Navigating Navigation (2024) Explores various aspects within navigation. These aspects can be categorised into four different sections: disorientation, algorithms, public space and communication.



Do You Think That You Could Land a Plane?

Do You Think That You Could Land a Plane? A short film (2024) by Fay Buurman, Dana de Paauw and Jara Hermanns, focuses on the complexity of certain actions and the overconfidence some of us feel in accomplishing said tasks without any training. Using visual overload to explain the complexity and overwhelming feeling when having to operate an airplane cockpit without being trained in an emergency situation.




Studies of Trees

Studies of Trees (2024) shows the study, originally conducted in 1914 by Jacob Joshua Levison. Starting from the original book found on the website of Project Gutenberg, now put into a new 2024 design.




Cyanotype


Cyanotype (2023) displays a series of experiments learning the ins and outs of the cyanotype technique. Experimenting with different ways to complete the cyanotype exposure process without using the exposure unit available in the workshop. This resulted into a series of abstract prints which are collected in a book.



Crossings

Crossings (2023) explores the route from home place to the academy. This book is part one of this project and focusses on the visual aspect of the route. By first generally observing everything that was happening the focus started to shift towards the lights being on/off/flickering.

Crossings (2023) explores the route from home place to the academy. This poster series is part two of this project and focusses on the audio element of the route aspect. One week of home to the academy results in ten observed train rides, translated into a ten-piece poster series. 



RIDE


RIDE (2024) is a JavaScript keypress event using Twenty One Pilots live performance of Ride (MTV Unplugged). Using the keys W(woooooo) D (DOO) I (SSHHH) and J (clap) users can visually express the live building of the song.



robstolk® amsterdam internship reports

During my MBO Graphic Design studies I wanted to know everything there was to know about offset (book) printing, production, bookbinding, especially the technical side of it all. I found my place at robstolk® amsterdam, prepress department. Under the guidance of Remko Schouten, Alex Feenstra and Freek Kuin, among others I learned so much of all of these processes.



Weekendje Texel

Weekendje Texel (2024) explores a self-written haiku through illustrative 2D animation. The haiku, written about a weekend away to Texel with a dear friend and the bike ride we decided to do, forgetting we were in fact on an island and different wind circumstances might be encountered. Using photographs from this weekend and illustration the animation guides through the adventures of that day.
